The tapered shape of the first two lampshades and the carefully calculated fitter recess (also called fitter drop)—the distance between the shade’s top diameter/top edge and the centre of the central lamp-holder/fitter ring—are designed so that, once mounted, the lampshade structure covers and conceals the lamp holder/socket from view. The cylindrical shade is likewise constructed with the same carefully positioned fitter recess so that the shade structure covers the lamp holder after mounting.
